Why IT risk analyses are challenging in practice

Risk analysis is a core element of any ISMS. In many organizations, however, it is still carried out manually, inconsistently, or detached from the information network. This leads to inconsistent results and makes effective risk management difficult.

Lack of a systematic approach

  • Risks are not assessed using a consistent methodology
  • Protection needs, threats, and vulnerabilities are not clearly linked
  • Results are difficult to compare

Isolated and manual assessments

  • Risk analyses are performed in spreadsheets or standalone tools
  • Links between risks and mitigation measures are not fully traceable
  • High manual maintenance effort

Limited timeliness and audit readiness

  • Changes in the information network are not consistently reflected
  • Risk decisions are difficult to explain retrospectively
  • Increased risk of audit findings

How Leno supports risk assessment and risk analysis

Leno enables a structured, integrated, and methodologically sound risk analysis in line with ISO 27001 and BSI—based on the complete information network.

Risk analysis based on a target–actual comparison

  • Direct linkage to the results of the protection needs assessment
  • Automatic derivation of vulnerabilities and threats as a basis
  • Flexible rating scales aligned with your individual risk matrix

Structured risk assessment

  • Assessment of likelihood and impact using Monte Carlo simulation
  • Consideration of defined threat and vulnerability scenarios
  • Transparent risk calculation and prioritization

Linkage to mitigation measures and risk treatment

  • Derivation of appropriate measures from identified risks
  • Automatic transfer to the risk register
  • Clear responsibilities and status tracking

Key questions on risk assessment and risk analysis

What you should know about risk analyses in line with ISO 27001 & BSI
What is a risk analysis according to BSI IT-Grundschutz and ISO 27001?

Risk analysis according to BSI IT-Grundschutz and ISO 27001 is used to systematically identify, assess, and prioritize information security–related risks. It forms the basis for selecting appropriate security measures within the framework of an ISMS.

How does the risk analysis according to ISO 27001 differ from that according to BSI IT-Grundschutz?

ISO 27001 allows a flexible, risk-based methodology, whereas BSI IT-Grundschutz is more standardized and catalog-based. Both approaches, however, share the same goal: to make risks transparent and manage them appropriately. Leno supports both methods as well as hybrid approaches.

Which risks must be considered as part of the risk analysis?

Risks arising from threats and vulnerabilities related to information assets, processes, and applications must be considered. These include, among others, technical, organizational, and external risks.

How often must a risk analysis be updated?

A risk analysis must be reviewed regularly and updated at least once a year. In addition, event-driven updates are required, for example, in case of changes in the information network, new threats, or significant process adjustments.

What is the difference between a protection requirement analysis and a risk analysis?

The protection requirement analysis determines how valuable or sensitive information, processes, or applications are. The risk analysis then assesses the risks to which these protection requirements are exposed and evaluates the potential impacts. Both analyses logically build upon each other.

What role does risk analysis play in audits and certifications?

Risk analysis is a key audit criterion in ISO 27001 certifications and internal audits. Auditors expect a transparent methodology, up-to-date assessments, and a clear derivation of actions.
